🔥 Fire kills woman on Darien Street: A fire Wednesday morning on the 2700 block of Darien Street killed a woman, PPD said. Heavy smoke was seen on both floors of the two-story rowhome around 10:15 a.m. and the fire was deemed under control at 10:59 a.m. The cause has not been disclosed.

🏈 Chiefs bar will close on Super Bowl Sunday: As they did when the Eagles played Kansas City in Super Bowl in 2023, Big Charlie’s Saloon at 13th and Moore — known for its affinity for the Eagles’ enemy in the big game — will close on Super Bowl Sunday.

🚴 🏃‍♂️ Schuylkill River Trail to expand to Navy Yard: The Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission has announced an expansion of the SRT across the Passyunk Avenue Bridge and down to the Navy Yard. The trail is currently under construction with a new bridge over the Delaware from Grays Ferry to Bartram’s Garden in West Philly, where it then extends down to 61st Street. The new proposal would send it over the bridge, down 26th Street, and to the Navy Yard. It’s paid for with Biden Infrastructure Bill money. [City]

🚧 Broad Street Diner says it will become a Hyatt hotel: While the empty Melrose Diner site at 15th and Snyder still sits empty, the same owner is counting down the days on its sister building, the Broad Street Diner at Broad and Ellsworth. Plans now are for that building to be demolished to make way for an extended-stay hotel under the Hyatt brand, the owner says. We’ll see. [Phila. Biz Journal $]

🍳 Update on Melrose plans: The Inquirer, meanwhile, has more on the plans for the Melrose Diner site. One of the developers, Maria Petrogiannis, says that “within the next few months, we are going to start building.” The plan calls for apartments upstairs with a new version of the Melrose on the ground floor. Again, we’ll see. [Inquirer $]

Openings and closings

💰 FS Investments leaving Navy Yard: 300 employees are moving to University City, as the company plans to ditch their building in the Navy Yard for a shiny new building (and tax credits) in the Schyulkill Yards development. Ultimately a win for Philly, though, considering they were planning on leaving the city entirely. [Biz Journal $]

👯 Ballet gear shop to open: The Rock School for Dance Education at Broad and Washington will open a storefront at the corner, set to sell all kinds of ballet and dance gear. A sign in the window says that the shop will open in the spring.

🎸 🌭 Cocktails, tunes, and hot dogs on South: The former Dobbs on South bar and live music venue at 304 South Street is again a bar and live music venue, this time called Nikki Lopez. The food menu is only hot dogs, and they have a ton of live shows scheduled already despite just opening this week. [@nikkilopezphilly on IG]

☕️ New cafe operator on South: Forin Cafe is taking over the former WIM Cafe on South Street between 2nd and 3rd. Forin currently operates two cafes in Kensington and are now in charge of their third, this one on the ground floor of the YOWIE hotel. They’re having a kickoff party on February 7. 🏥 Urgent care center closes on Broad: The Carbon Health urgent care at Broad and Bainbridge has closed. It was only open for about a year. In general, South Philly is a bit of a desert for urgent care locations — now with just two: a Vybe near Broad and Wharton and an AFC near Broad and Snyder.

This week’s old school photo

A weekly South Philly Scoop feature - an old school photo from somewhere in South Philly, and a bit of the history and background behind it.

From May 26, 1937, we see the construction of the Edward W. Bok Vocational School, this photo taken at 8th and Dudley Streets. (The photo is marked with the intersection 9th and Mifflin, but so apparently were all photos of the building during construction.)

This would have been a little less than a year from final completion of the building, which was capped off in February 1938. Construction began in 1935, and was funded by the Public Works Administration as part of FDR’s New Deal.

The building closed as a school in 2013, and is now (as you surely know) a bustling hub of arts, food, and the rooftop Bok Bar.

It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.
